A LATE START, AND A BET ON HIMSELF.
Francis grew up in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the youngest of six in a family that put education first. Football was everywhere in the city – but for the Kioyos, it came second to school, which makes what happened next all the more unlikely.
He came to the game late. Where most professionals start as small children, Francis didn’t play organized football until he was sixteen. His family had other plans; his mother hoped he’d study medicine. But the talent was impossible to ignore, and with his brother’s backing he earned a place in the youth setup at Union Douala – choosing the harder road when the safe one pointed somewhere else.

NINETEEN, AND A ONE-WAY TICKET TO GERMANY
At nineteen, Francis moved to Germany – expecting a trial in the second division, and landing instead in the fourth tier, in a new country, a new language, a new climate. He scored anyway. Fourteen goals in seven matches announced him immediately, and that form earned his first professional contract with SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the 2. Bundesliga.
It’s the moment that still shapes how he coaches. Adapting to a new culture and level at that age taught him that environment matters as much as talent — the conviction behind the cross-continental work he does today.
03 | 2000 – 2011
A STRIKER ACROSS GERMANY’S TOUGHEST LEAGUES
Over more than a decade, Francis played across Germany’s professional pyramid – Greuther Fürth, 1. FC Köln, 1860 Munich, Rot-Weiss Essen – reaching the Bundesliga and scoring the golden goal that carried Köln back to the top flight. His most productive years came at Energie Cottbus, where he helped drive the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2006, alongside a young Gregg Berhalter – later head coach of the US Men’s National Team.
He also wore the Cameroon shirt. Called up in 2002, he made his senior debut coming on for Samuel Eto’o – and that year was part of the Cameroon squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Mali.

Football also made Francis a father to a footballer — his son plays professionally in Europe. Becoming a parent changed how he saw the game: not only as performance, but as a way to raise capable, grounded people. He calls himself a Familienvater, and says fatherhood informs everything about how he coaches.
When his playing days wound down, he didn’t leave the sport. He explored other paths like fashion and international consulting before returning to the thing he knew best, this time to build others up.
05 | THE METHOD
LIVED IT. NOW HE TEACHES IT.
Francis earned his coaching education in Germany and France and built a deep set of credentials: a UEFA B+ License, the DFB’s youth talent qualifications, a Bachelor in Sport Science & Fitness, a Fitness Trainer “A” License, and a Sports Business Manager diploma. Since 2021 he’s coached in the DFB’s talent-development program in Berlin.
Today he leads Kioyo Performance, where everything runs on the KIO-X Method – a holistic approach to enhancing lives through soccer. It develops the whole athlete to reach the highest level on the field, and to carry the mindset, skills, and network that last far beyond it. Athlete, father, coach – Francis has seen the journey from every side.
